Introduction

There are no stupid questions
Q: Do we even need a print publication? In other words, can a periodical boost sales for my organization?
A: Many organizations can profit from publishing a magazine or newsletter. These orgagazines, for the most part, share the following characteristeics:
1. They have a large client base that cannot be contacted personally on a regular basis.
2. They can offer their clients meaningful information (see the general and editorial subsections of "Dos and Don'ts") .

Q: What kind of results can be expected?
A: This depends on your goals. During the planning of your publication, outline your goals for the custom publishing professional, who will help you devise tools to measure them. Such tools mights include a before and after survey, inquiries, response cards returned, Web site visits, etc. For some organizations, the results stand out, like those of Cistercian Prep School*, which saw a 70 percent increase in alumni donations. (Note: Improved solicitation efforts also played a role in this increase.)

* See Cistercian Prep case study.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: The cost of publishing a periodical includes the following:
1. Content:
2. Printing
3. Photography
4. Postage/mail house services
Content includes writing and editing plus design and production. For a standard magazine-sized publication (approximately 8.5" x 11"), content can run from $250 to $500 per page. The volume and research involved in the writing is the primarly variable here.
While Stewart Publications can help you find a printer, photographer, and mail house, those costs are quite variable (i.e., they depend on quantity, quality, size, color, number of pages, etc.).
